The Decade of Dirty Design by Steven Heller

Post-nostalgia stress syndrome for the 1990s—a curious love/hate relationship with grunge type—is finally kicking in just as the first decade of 2000 is coming to a close. Nostalgia is so last century. It is time for design pundits to start looking forward, but not before looking back at the past 10 years in order to neatly categorize and define the design aesthetic of the era (assuming this can be labeled an era). Actually, I’m putting my dibs in to be the first to offer some viable categorization. I know it is cheating to do so before 2009 is officially over.. What’s more I hold that fairness is not an issue when staking out one’s pundit-turf. So let’s begin…. read more here.

BREAKING: After 55 Years in Print, Design Icon I.D. Magazine Folds

Devastating news for the design world: After 55 years in publication, I.D. Magazine, America’s foremost design publication, has folded.

I.D. was the oldest design magazine in the country, and was the one-time employer of many noteworthy figures, including Bruce Mau. Its yearly design competition, the Annual Design Review, was the oldest and biggest design competition in America, and had been operating ever since I.D.’s inception. (cont.) [ via noahkalina ]

Doesn’t suprise me much, with the economic recession and the proliferation of media recently, the access of news and information is at our very finger tips. Though I’ve never been an I.D convert, I hope other publications will learn from this and hopefully we will get better quality magazines. Read more here about I.D closing here.

We’ve been a little quiet lately as it is December and we’re all in high spirits for holidays, food and good company, therefore we’ll be having DC Feast very soon. We’re finalizing the dates, but it could dates could look possibly next weekend. So stay tuned to all those who get invites!

On to other news, I just got off with the phone with Patricia this morning and she has just touched down back on home soil after a splendid 3 week vacation in Tokyo, Japan. We’ll be meeting up soon and possibly unveiling our next 2 small programmes and new members who will join DC in 2 - 3 weeks, think of it as a pre new years unveiling. More on that soon…

While delegates from 200 nations meet in Copenhagen to defuse the time bomb of catastrophic climate change, a multimedia art installation floats on a barge near the Tycho Brahe Planetarium to remind participants and onlookers of how much risk is in the air. CO2 CUBES: Visualize a Tonne of Change is a structure 27 feet on each side that represents 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide, the amount produced by the average citizen of an industrialized country in a month, and half the total of the typical American. Created from 12 shipping containers to form the equivalent of a three-story building, the installation is clad on two sides with architectural mesh fabric that serves as a screen for video displays related to the impact and solutions for climate change. This information can be accessed by the world at large via YouTube.

The cube was designed by the Los Angeles–based architect Christophe Cornubert and Italian-born Danish sculptor Alfio Bonannos and produced by Obscura Digital, a service that maps dynamic digital content onto large, unwieldy architectural surfaces. On view through December 18, 2009.

A friend gave me this wonderful link this morning of how the simplest and cheapest objects can affect and benefit people’s lives. Seoul design studio Unplug Design created an aid package that can be made into a football by children in developing countries.

The project called Dreamball consist of cylindrical containers for the delivery of aid packages, which the children can roll into where they please instead of carrying it.

Tan Yew Leong, Creative Director of Leo Burnett, Kuala Lumpur

Yew Leong started his career as a designer at William Harald Wong, a boutique design outfit. He then joined Dentsu, Young & Rubicam as an art director responsible for Shell, Tiger Beer and Colgate Palmolive. Thereafter he joined Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur where he now runs the creative department together with his ECD. He is the other half of the creative team that is responsible for the long running hugely popular Petronas corporate campaign. The many feathers in his cap include accolades from Cannes Lions, One Show, D&AD, Clios, Andys, New York Festival, London festival, AWARD, ADFEST, Media Marketing and Malaysian Kancil’s.
